Pre-Tour Concert "Music for Leipzig"

Image
A goodly audience enjoyed our concert Music for Leipzig last night at Shirley Methodist Church.  Our "big" pieces, Mendelssohn's Four Sacred Partsongs and From the Bavarian Highlands by Elgar, went down very well, and they were stunned by our opening Hallelujah Chorus - sung from memory! Our organist, Stephen Perrins gave a magnificent account of JS Bach's Fantasia in G , and one of our altos, Rosemary Asher, brought the house down with a selection of well-known "songs from the shows". Following Rosie's spot came a lovely contrast when John paired the Ave Verum Corpus by William Byrd with Ola Gjelo's Ubi Caritas - two pieces written 500 years apart but which go together so well.  The rest of the programme included rousing anthems by Ireland, Bairstow and Wood.  We finished by giving a whether-you-want-it-or-not encore in the shape of John Rutter's The Lord Bless You and Keep You , again sung from memory. All bodes well for our t

Last Chance to hear Leipzig!

Ever wondered what a choir might get up to when it goes abroad singing? It might all sound very ordinary, but nothing could be further from the truth......! Intrigued? To find out more, why not come to our pre-Concert Tour at Shirley Methodist Church, Stratford Road, Shirley at 7.30pm on Saturday 29th July and hear the music which we will be singing in Leipzig? Refreshments will be served in the interval, and there is free parking behind the Church in the Iceland car park. You will be entertained by magnificent Mendelssohn, elegant Elgar and blistering Bach. Oh, and a bit of harmonious Handel as well, coupled with a splendid organ solo from our Tour accompanist Stephen Perrins, and some musical theatre from soloist Rosemary Asher. Once we hit Germany, you can follow our adventures via this blog. The X Factor has nothing on us! Hopefully you'll then realise that being in a choir is the best amount of fun anyone can have, and you'd be most welcome to come and see for

July - one month to go!

You might have noticed that we haven't posted for a while. Well, rehearsals have been happening every week which, while challenging and exciting for us probably wouldn't be of much interest to you! We've learned most of the music now, though the last one of Elgar's From the Bavarian Highlands is proving a bit tricky, and the Hallelujah Chorus and Rutter's The Lord Bless You And Keep You are more or less committed to memory! There's just a month to go - we leave for Leipzig on August 3rd - and we've got a concert before then (29th July at Shirley Methodist Church - do come and support us). Here's the poster for our concert in Bad Schmiedeberg which has been provided by our travel agents, acfea:
